Cmail Migration - Various Instructions

There are several tasks that you may need to do before or after a migration.  I'm including directions to perform these here.



Change eMail forwarding settings

There are two ways to change your mail forwarding settings.  I've seen a couple instances where the 1st method didn't work so I'm including the second in case you have problems.

  1. Log into   You can change your forwarding settings here. 
  2. You can also change your mail forwarding settings through your CMail account.
    1. Log into
    2. Click the "Options" link on the left side of the window
    3. Click the blue "Forwarding" link near the top of the page
    4. Uncheck the box next to "Also Deliver a copy to cMail" and click the "Save" button.


Disable Keep-A-Copy in CMail

  1. Log into
  2. Click the "Options" link on the left side of the window
  3. Click the blue "Forwarding" link near the top of the page
  4. Uncheck the box next to "Also Deliver a copy to cMail" and click the "Save" button.


Set up the Google account before migrating

Moving from CMail to a Google account requires some additional steps on your part before we can preform an automated migration of your email.

  1. Agree to the Terms of the University of Chicago Google Apps account if you haven't already done this.
  2. Enable IMAP support in your Google Apps account.  This is required to allow your email program to download mail from your new account.
    1. Click on the Gear icon in the top-right corner of the web-site
    2. Select "Settings"
    3. Click the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP link, located near the top-middle of the page.
    4. Enable the IMAP protocol and save changes.
    5. Set up a new email account profile in your eMail program


Keep a copy of email in XMail and foward a copy to another server

  1. From within the website, click on the 'Options' tab right underneath your cnet_id near the top right corner of the window
  2. Select 'Create an Inbox Rule ...'. 
  3. Select the 'Inbox Rules' icon
  4. Select 'New...' to create a 'New Inbox Rule'. A small window will pop up.
  5. Under 'When the message arrives, and:', select '[Apply to all messages]' from the drop down list, so the rule will apply to all incoming mail for your xmail account.  
  6. Under the 'Do the following:' field,  select 'Redirect the message to...' option. Another window will appear where you can input non-University email addresses at the bottom under the 'Message recipients:' field.

When you've done the above and saved the new filter, all email coming into your XMail account will go into your inbox and a copy will also be forwarded to the address you entered above.


Using your Google Apps account as an EMail Archive

Whether you choose to receive your email at the University of Chicago Google Apps account or not, you can still use that 25GB of storage to provide a backup archive of your email.

The Google Apps GMail account is created when you claim your Google Apps access.  If you do not opt to forward your email to Google, the account simply sits there idle.  It is, however, still accessible at the address

There are several ways to set up forwarding to that account depending on how you currently, or plan to receive your email.

  1. The easiest way to handle this is most likely with a mail filter created in your XMail account.  Instructions are available here.  Follow these directions, using as the target address.
  2. You can also set this up from inside your EMail reader application. The exact instructions vary from program to program but the basic idea is the same.  You create a mail rule that sends a copy of the email to your account. 
  • Receive email at a personal GMail account This one get's a little complicated, please bear with me
  1. Log into your personal GMail account
    • Click the Gear icon, top-left corner of window
    • Select "Settings"
    • Click "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" link at top-middle of page
    • Click "Add a forwarding address"
    • Type in your address. 
  2. An email was sent to your to confirm you want to forward your mail to that address.
    • Log into your Google Apps account at  Use '' as your user ID, and your gpassword that you created when claiming your Google Apps account.  You'll need to log out of your personal GMail account first, or use a 2nd web browser to log in to your UofC google account.
    • Open that email and click the link inside to confirm ownership of the account.
  3. Go back to your personal GMail account and return to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" pane of the settings.
    • Click the 'radio button' in teh "Forwarding" section to enable "Forward a copy of my incoming mail to"
    • In the drop-down button ot the right of the above option, make sure the addres to your account is selected.
    • Immediately below that line, select "keep GMail's copy in the Inbox"
    • Click "Save Changes" at the bottom of the page.
